Climb Leader

I was the climber leader for a wedding held at the peak of the bridge, it was a transcendent experience. Being at such a unique vantage point, amidst the sky and river, allowed me to play an integral role in the couple’s extraordinary day. Witnessing their love bloom against the breathtaking backdrop was both humbling and exhilarating, creating memories as enduring as the structure itself. The joy of contributing to their celebration, surrounded by panoramic views, was a beautiful reminder of the heights love can reach and the uncharted paths it can traverse.

The first time I led a climb with just two people, it was a new couple, head over heels in love. We had the bridge to ourselves, allowing for a wonderfully intimate moment. They got to enjoy my favorite spot on the Bridge together, making it truly special.

Taking a large group of Taiwanese adventurers up the bridge was an exhilarating challenge right from the start. The moment we realized that our words were lost in translation, it was clear that this climb would be unlike any other. We stood there, a little awkward, surrounded by the spectacular views and a language barrier. But soon, the universal language of gestures, laughter, and shared excitement took over. Each step brought more confidence, and before long, our group was a cohesive unit, communicating through laughter and the shared thrill of the climb. By the time we reached the summit, the night sky was
dazzling, and so was the camaraderie. What began as an awkward encounter had transformed into an unforgettable, fun-filled night climb.

Once, I guided an eleven-year-old girl who, just two years prior, was in a wheelchair. Her unwavering goal was to climb the Story Bridge, and it was incredibly special to hear her story and witness her triumph as she achieved her dream. It was a truly unforgettable experience!

I can’t pick just one climb story, but being part of so many is a blast! From conquering fears to celebrating milestones, and even witnessing proposals and weddings, every climb is a joyous adventure.

Climb Leader

One of my favourite climbs I’ve ever done was lead a tour that had a young lady on who was petrified of heights. With tears in her eyes, she refused to return down because she was determined to reach the top, to be where her father proposed to her mother years ago. At the end, she did it, and was beyond grateful of doing so.

As my climb group ascended the bridge, we noticed a fisherman below, casually casting his line into the Brisbane River. Just as we paused to watch, his rod suddenly bent sharply—something big was on the other end. We held our breath as he reeled it in, expecting a hefty fish. But to everyone’s shock (especially his), out of the water came a small Bull Shark, thrashing wildly! For a moment, there was a stunned silence—then a mix of laughter, disbelief, and probably a bit of reconsideration about how close we would all be getting to the river in the future.

Operations Supervisor

In my first year with SBAC, I experienced my first New
Year’s Eve atop the Story Bridge. The night was
electrifying, and the fireworks were nothing short of
spectacular. As vibrant explosions lit up the sky, I felt incredibly fortunate to have the best seat in Brisbane, watching the city come alive in a dazzling display of color and light. The excitement, the joy, and the sheer magic of that moment made it an unforgettable celebration.

Sarah Townsend

Business Manager

On his final climb before moving overseas, Mike, one of our climb leaders, found the courage to walk the plank and lean out. Though he had always been terrified to try it, he decided he had nothing to lose. The sense  of pride and accomplishment he felt was incredible, ending his time in Brisbane on a literal and emotional high. It was a triumphant
and exhilarating farewell to the city he loved

Freddy Laprea

Administration

Freddy’s favorite story about the bridge comes from a climber who shared tales about his grandad, Arthur Moo. On the landmark’s 50th birthday, Arthur recounted his unique experience as a “double walker” of the Story Bridge in a newspaper article. A proud Aussie Postmaster, he loved Brisbane dearly and cherished his connection to the iconic bridge.

There’s a fun tidbit from the Felons Brewing story: the convicts aimed for Wollongong but somehow wound up on Moreton! As a Sydney boy, it never fails to amuse me how they managed to stray so far off course!

It’s hard to pick just one climb but my favourites always include an element of surprise. Whether that be a rainbow or random fireworks in the distance, a whole city cat waving at you, or a gender reveal or marriage proposal below us. Being on the bridge and experiencing something already spectacular at a different angle and levitation just makes the moment so much more magical and feels like a special secret memory that I get to share with my climb group and cherish forever.
