Meet Our Team

Alison

Climb Leader

I was the climber leader for a wedding held at the peak of the bridge, it was a transcendent experience. Being at such a unique vantage point, amidst the sky and river, allowed me to play an integral role in the couple’s extraordinary day. Witnessing their love bloom against the breathtaking backdrop was both humbling and exhilarating, creating memories as enduring as the structure itself. The joy of contributing to their celebration, surrounded by panoramic views, was a beautiful reminder of the heights love can reach and the uncharted paths it can traverse.

Climbing the bridge at twilight is like stepping into a living painting. As the sun dips, the city below awakens, a symphony of sounds rising up. The hum of traffic and the chatter of pedestrians mix with the occasional roar of a plane overhead. Lights begin to flicker on, one by one, illuminating the skyline in a dazzling display. The city is invigorated, bustling with night energy, while up on the bridge, a peaceful sky stretches above, a tranquil counterpoint to the vibrant life below. It’s a magical moment, where the noise and lights of the city blend into a beautiful, rhythmic dance, and you feel on top of the world.

The first time I led a climb with just two people, it was a new couple, head over heels in love. We had the bridge to ourselves, allowing for a wonderfully intimate moment. They got to enjoy my favorite spot on the Bridge together, making it truly special.

Freddy’s favorite story about the bridge comes from a climber who shared tales about his grandad, Arthur Moo. On the landmark’s 50th birthday, Arthur recounted his unique experience as a “double walker” of the Story Bridge in a newspaper article. A proud Aussie Postmaster, he loved Brisbane dearly and cherished his connection to the iconic bridge.

It was a dreary day and we got rained on, but it felt like a classic Drew Barrymore movie moment, embracing the rain and living our best lives. With a big group of people, everyone
was laughing and fully present in the moment. When we reached the top, a full double rainbow greeted us. I also adore dawn climbs. There’s something magical about watching the city wake up, with rowers gliding on the water and feeling so connected to the heartbeat of the city.

Taking a large group of Taiwanese adventurers up the bridge was an exhilarating challenge right from the start. The moment we realized that our words were lost in translation, it was clear that this climb would be unlike any other. We stood there, a little awkward, surrounded by the spectacular views and a language barrier. But soon, the universal language of gestures, laughter, and shared excitement took over. Each step brought more confidence, and before long, our group was a cohesive unit, communicating through laughter and the shared thrill of the climb. By the time we reached the summit, the night sky was
dazzling, and so was the camaraderie. What began as an awkward encounter had transformed into an unforgettable, fun-filled night climb.

In my first year with SBAC, I experienced my first New
Year’s Eve atop the Story Bridge. The night was
electrifying, and the fireworks were nothing short of
spectacular. As vibrant explosions lit up the sky, I felt incredibly fortunate to have the best seat in Brisbane, watching the city come alive in a dazzling display of color and light. The excitement, the joy, and the sheer magic of that moment made it an unforgettable celebration.

Climb Leader

In my first week as a climb leader, I had the joy of guiding a very nervous climber up the bridge. His girlfriend was right by his side, soothing his nerves. Little did she know, his real anxiety was about something far more nerve-wracking than the climb. He had secretly planned with our team to propose to her at the top! It was the most beautiful moment I’ve experienced as a climb leader. Seeing him down on one knee, proposing to the love of his life, and her joyful “yes” was pure magic. The whole group descended with hearts full of joy, and we celebrated their engagement with a sparkling toast, cheering for the groom who not only conquered his fear of heights but also won his true love’s heart. Cheers to love and adventure!

On a crisp day in July 2021, Betty McLennan journeyed from Mooloolaba to Brisbane. At the age of 96, she proved that age is merely a number by climbing Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge. Her daughter, Desley Williams, shared that Betty’s eyes twinkled with an adventurous spark that could inspire anyone, young or old. Betty’s ascent to the top of the Story Bridge wasn’t just a physical challenge; it was a celebration, a milestone, and a unique gift from her daughter. Desley humorously remarked, “Well – what do you buy someone for their 96th birthday? They’ve done everything and have everything.” Betty’s climb is a powerful reminder that life doesn’t slow down unless you do. Her journey to the top of the Story Bridge is a testament to living fully and pushing the boundaries of possibility at any age.

We had an unforgettable climb with a spirited father and son duo—dad was 85 and his son was 65. As soon as the dad was hooked onto the bridge, he was so excited that he bolted up the stairs, leaving everyone in the dust! I turned to the son and asked, “What’s your dad doing?” He chuckled and said, “He has dementia and probably forgot why he was on the bridge.” I had to sprint after the dad and bring him back to the start, making for a climb we won’t soon forget!

On his final climb before moving overseas, Mike, one of our climb leaders, found the courage to walk the plank and lean out. Though he had always been terrified to try it, he decided he had nothing to lose. My favorite climb story involves an energetic Year 6 group from St. William’s Primary in Keperra. These kids were fantastic! The tough ones rallied around to support the scared ones, offering encouragement and cheering each other on. They sang songs, exuded politeness, and displayed a fearless, fun-loving spirit. Their happiness and positivity were contagious, and they were genuinely thrilled to be out of the classroom and experiencing the excitement of climbing the Story Bridge. It was a joyful, uplifting day that showcased the best of teamwork and adventure!
