8 Days in Brisbane: A City, Islands and Rainforest Itinerary

Last updated:

Most visitors give Brisbane two or three days on the way to somewhere else. Give it eight and you get three holidays in one: a river city, a pair of sand islands and a mountain rainforest, each about an hour or so from the city.

The best way to spend eight days in Brisbane is five nights at Howard Smith Wharves and two nights in the D’Aguilar rainforest: a guided city walk, a Twilight Climb of the Story Bridge (from A$180, 90 minutes), a day snorkelling the 15 Tangalooma shipwrecks off Moreton Island, a four-wheel-drive day on Bribie Island, a whale watching cruise from Redcliffe (June to early November), then a drive up to Mount Glorious. That is the route UK travel company Travelbag has packaged as its Brisbane, Islands and Rainforest Escape, and we are proud to be the climb in it.

Here is how the week fits together day by day, with prices, timings and the booking details that matter, whether you take the package or build the trip yourself.

Key Takeaways

  • Eight days covers Brisbane city, Moreton Island, Bribie Island and D’Aguilar National Park without a single internal flight
  • Staying at Howard Smith Wharves puts you directly under the Story Bridge: our climb base is next door to the Crystalbrook Vincent hotel
  • The Twilight Climb is our most popular climb, taking in daylight, sunset and city lights in one 90-minute experience, from A$180 per person
  • Whale watching only runs from June to early November, so pick your travel dates around it if whales are a priority
  • You only need a hire car for the last three days; the city and both island days work without one

What Does an 8-Day Brisbane Itinerary Look Like?

Travelbag’s package sets the ingredients: five nights in the city, five guided experiences, then three days of car hire and two nights in the rainforest. The day-by-day order below is our suggestion for fitting them together. The city days are interchangeable, so shuffle them around the weather and your energy levels.

All prices are in Australian dollars, taken from each operator’s published rates in October 2026, and will change. At the time of writing Travelbag lists the package from £2,499 per person for seven nights, including return flights from the UK, based on travel in March 2027.

Where Should You Stay in Brisbane?

Stay at Howard Smith Wharves if you can. It is the riverside dining precinct tucked under the northern end of the Story Bridge, and it is where the package bases you: five nights at Crystalbrook Vincent, a 166-room hotel at 5 Boundary Street with the Fiume rooftop bar and pool looking straight up at the bridge.

The practical advantage is that almost nothing on the city days needs a taxi. Felons Brewing Co, Mr Percival’s, Stanley and Yoko Dining are on the boardwalk outside the hotel. The Howard Smith Wharves ferry terminal is a short walk along the river, and every bus, train and ferry on the network costs a flat 50 cents (Translink). Our climb base is at the same address as the hotel, between Crystalbrook Vincent and Betty’s Burgers.

Arriving: the package includes an airport transfer. If you are travelling independently, the Airtrain takes about 20 minutes from Brisbane Airport to the city, with fares from $23.30 (Translink). The 50-cent fare does not apply to the Airtrain.

What Is the Story Bridge Twilight Climb Like?

The Twilight Climb is a 90-minute guided climb to the top of the Story Bridge, 80 metres above the Brisbane River, timed so you see the city in daylight, at sunset and under lights in a single climb. It is our most popular climb and costs from A$180 per person. You need no climbing experience, only to be comfortable climbing stairs. You are attached to the bridge the whole way, and your Climb Leader shares stories about the bridge and the city as you go.

Climbers in climb suits and harnesses smiling on the Story Bridge at dusk, with the Brisbane city skyline lit up across the river
The Twilight Climb: the sky fades, the bridge lights come on and the city starts to glow.

From the summit you can see the whole week laid out. The city towers are directly across the river, the sun sets behind the ranges to the west, where this trip finishes, and Moreton Bay lies to the east. That is why we suggest climbing early in the trip: it is the best orientation Brisbane offers.

What to know before you climb:

  • Climbers must be at least 6 years old and 110cm tall, and weigh under 130kg
  • Wear comfortable clothes and fully enclosed, rubber-soled shoes. We provide the climb suit and all safety equipment
  • Phones, cameras, watches and jewellery stay in a secure locker at base. Your Climb Leader takes the photos, and a Photo Pack is $40 when added online
  • Every climber aged 18 or over takes a breathalyser test and must record under 0.05% BAC, so save the sunset drinks for afterwards
  • We climb in most weather, including rain, and provide rain jackets when needed

If you are travelling on the Travelbag package, your Twilight Climb is booked for you as part of the holiday. If you are booking direct, you can reserve the Twilight Climb online, and a $35 Flexi Ticket lets you reschedule up to an hour before your climb, which is handy insurance on a long-haul trip.

Local tip: book dinner on the Howard Smith Wharves boardwalk for after your climb. The restaurants are a short stroll from our base. Curious about crossing the bridge on foot instead? We have answered that in Can You Walk Across the Story Bridge?

Which Guided Walking Tour Is Best for a First Day?

A guided walk on your first full morning is the gentlest cure for jet lag: daylight, movement and someone else doing the navigating. The package includes a tour with Urban Tours Brisbane, a locally owned small-group operator. Its Best of Brisbane Walking Tour runs for three hours over about 6.5 kilometres, starting at Post Office Square at 9am or 2pm, with a maximum of eight people and adult tickets from $89.

The route covers the city centre’s history in one loop: Anzac Square, the Old Windmill, King George Square and City Hall, Brisbane Arcade, the Treasury building, Queen’s Wharf, Parliament House and the City Botanic Gardens. It does not reach the Story Bridge, which is one more reason to pair it with a climb that evening.

On a tighter budget, Brisbane City Council’s volunteer Brisbane Greeters run free guided walks from City Hall, typically 10am to 12:30pm. Book through the Council’s website.

How Do You Snorkel the Tangalooma Wrecks?

You take a 75-minute catamaran from Holt Street Wharf in Brisbane across Moreton Bay to Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin), then join a guided snorkel tour by boat from the beach. The Snorkel the Wrecks Day Cruise costs $179 per adult and $149 per child aged 6 to 14. That covers the return cruise, the guided snorkel with wetsuit, mask, fins and snorkel, a resort access pass and a lunch voucher.

The wrecks themselves are 15 vessels deliberately sunk by the Queensland Government between 1963 and 1984 to create a safe anchorage for small boats. Six decades on they are a reef in their own right, home to more than 100 species of fish (Tangalooma Island Resort). The snorkel tour runs for about 90 minutes including the briefing and boat ride, with roughly 30 to 35 minutes in the water, and life jackets are available if you are not a confident swimmer.

Cruises leave Brisbane at 7:30am or 10am and return from the island at 4pm. The rest of the day is yours for the beach and a long lunch at the resort. Upgraded versions of the cruise add sunset cocktails or the resort’s evening wild dolphin feeding and return at 7pm.

What Is There to Do on Bribie Island?

Bribie Island is the wilder, quieter island day, about an hour north of Brisbane by road. Its national park is four-wheel-drive country, which is why a guided day is the easy way to see it.

G’Day Adventure Tours runs the day trip in the package. It is about nine hours door to door, from $249, with pick-ups in Fortitude Valley and at Roma Street. The day takes in a beach drive through remote parts of Bribie Island National Park, a walk through the Second World War bunkers at Fort Bribie, a swim in tea-tree-stained lagoons, time on Ocean Beach and a locally sourced lunch by the sand. Transport, lunch, drinks and national park fees are included.

Local tip: the lagoons are stained the colour of tea by the surrounding tea trees. Bring swimmers and a towel.

When Is Whale Watching Season in Brisbane?

Whale watching season in Brisbane runs from June to early November, when humpback whales migrate along the east coast past Moreton Bay. Outside those months the cruises do not operate, so if whales are a must, plan your trip inside that window. The humpback recovery is one of Australia’s great conservation stories: a preliminary 2024 estimate put the eastern Australian population above 50,000, up from around 150 in the early 1960s (ABC News).

Brisbane Whale Watching sails daily in season, weather permitting, from Redcliffe Jetty north of the city aboard the purpose-built catamaran MV Eye-Spy. Boarding is at 9am for a 10am departure, returning between 2pm and 2:30pm, with a picnic lunch and commentary included. Adult tickets start from $185 (Visit Brisbane). Sightings are guaranteed: if no whales appear, you are offered a complimentary cruise on the next available departure.

Travelling between December and May? Use the day for the city itself. South Bank’s free galleries and museums, a CityCat ride along the river and an afternoon in New Farm fill it easily, and our guide to the best things to do in Brisbane has more ideas.

Is D’Aguilar National Park Worth Two Nights?

Yes, because it is the contrast that makes the trip. After five days of river, salt water and city lights, you collect a hire car and within about 45 minutes you are in cool mountain rainforest at the village of Mount Glorious.

Climbers waving from the summit of the Story Bridge at sunset, with the mountain ranges west of Brisbane on the horizon
The ranges on the horizon are where this itinerary ends: you can see them from the top of the bridge on day two.

The package stays two nights at Maiala Park Lodge, a First Nations owned and operated lodge at 37 Fahey Road, Mount Glorious. It is deliberately small, with four suites and one cottage, shared living rooms with fireplaces, and a pool. The lodge sits on Garumngar country of the Jinibara nation.

The Maiala section of D’Aguilar National Park is close to the lodge, with signposted rainforest walking tracks and, further along the range, lookouts facing west over Lake Wivenhoe. A full day is enough to walk in the morning, drive the lookouts in the afternoon and be back by the fire before dark. Check track conditions and closures on the Queensland Parks website before you set out.

Driving tip: the road up the range is a winding mountain drive, and it is cooler at the top than in the city. Pack a jumper whatever the season.

When Is the Best Time to Do This Trip?

Brisbane is a year-round destination, so the best time depends on which part of the itinerary matters most to you.

  • June to early November is the only window that includes whale watching. Winter days are mild and dry, with average maximums of around 22°C in June and July
  • March to May is warm without the peak of summer heat, with average maximums easing from about 29°C in March to 24°C in May
  • December to February is hot and humid, averaging around 30°C, with afternoon storms likely. It is beach weather for the island days

Temperatures are long-term averages from the Bureau of Meteorology. The Twilight Climb runs all year, and its departure time moves with the sunset. If it rains, we still climb: here is what to do in Brisbane when it rains.

How Do You Book It?

From the UK, as a package: Travelbag sells the full itinerary with flights, both hotels, the five experiences, three days of car hire and an arrival transfer. See the Brisbane, Islands and Rainforest Escape page for current prices and dates.

Independently: every experience here can be booked direct with the operator, and the links above go to each one. Book the climb, the Tangalooma cruise and the whale watching cruise before you travel, as they are the three with fixed departure times, and add Flexi to your climb if your plans might shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need in Brisbane?

Three days covers the city highlights, but eight days lets you add the islands and the rainforest without rushing. A week-long Brisbane itinerary typically includes four or five nights in the city for the Story Bridge Adventure Climb, Moreton Island and Bribie Island day trips, then two nights in D’Aguilar National Park at Mount Glorious, about 45 minutes’ drive from the city.

Is the Story Bridge Twilight Climb worth it?

The Twilight Climb is the most popular climb at Story Bridge Adventure Climb because it covers three views in one: Brisbane in daylight, at sunset and under city lights. It takes 90 minutes, reaches 80 metres above the Brisbane River and costs from A$180 per person. No climbing experience is needed, and climbers must be at least 6 years old and 110cm tall.

Do you need a car in Brisbane?

Not for the city. Public transport costs a flat 50 cents per trip on buses, trains and ferries, and the Tangalooma, Bribie Island and whale watching days all run as organised tours or cruises. A hire car is only needed for the rainforest leg to Mount Glorious and D’Aguilar National Park, which is why this itinerary includes three days of car hire at the end.

Can you visit Moreton Island as a day trip from Brisbane?

Yes. Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island is a 75-minute catamaran cruise from Holt Street Wharf in Brisbane. The Snorkel the Wrecks Day Cruise leaves at 7:30am or 10am, returns at 4pm, and costs $179 per adult including a guided snorkel of the 15 Tangalooma shipwrecks, all equipment and a lunch voucher.

Can you see whales in Brisbane in March?

No. Humpback whales pass Brisbane from June to early November, and whale watching cruises from Redcliffe only operate during those months. If you are visiting between December and May, swap the whale watching day for a day in the city, or choose travel dates inside the season.

What should you wear for the Story Bridge climb?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and fully enclosed, rubber-soled shoes such as trainers or runners. Story Bridge Adventure Climb provides a climb suit that goes over your clothes, plus all safety equipment and a rain jacket if needed. Phones, cameras, watches and jewellery are stored in secure lockers at base before you climb.
