What’s included in our stem excusrions?
Guided STEM Climb
Led by expert Climb Leaders, students will discover the incredible feats of engineering that brought the Story Bridge to life — from its 1925 planning to its 5-year construction. They’ll learn about structural load distribution, material selection, and the innovative safety designs that continue to keep the bridge operational today.
Hands-On STEM Learning Opportunities
Students will explore:
Engineering: How materials, design, and physics work together to support large-scale structures.
Mathematics: Measurement of height, mass, and geometric angles, with real-world calculations integrated into the experience.
Physics: Gravitational forces, friction, and energy transformations during the ascent and descent.
Technology: Use of harnesses, safety equipment, and communication systems developed for safe bridge climbing.
Group Photo and Certificate of Achievement
Celebrate your STEM adventure with a commemorative group photo at the summit and personalised certificates for all students — recognising their climb and STEM engagement.
During the Experience:

Student groups can explore the challenges of building the Story Bridge, from city planning to construction.
Students can explore and engage in the challenges faced, from the Cross River Commission recommendation for the bridge to be built in 1925, to its design and 5-year construction, including the choice of materials, structural design, and safety.
A visit to the Story Bridge can incorporate discussions and activities related to structural integrity, load distribution, and innovative engineering solutions through prior learning and workbook completion. Students will enter an environment where they can learn about the technological advancements that have allowed for safe bridge maintenance through our efficient bridge climbing experiences. All climbers will explore the use of harnesses, safety equipment, and communication systems that ensure participants’ well-being during the climb.
Mathematics can be integrated into the experience by exploring concepts such as measurement, geometry, and data analysis. Students can calculate the bridge’s height, length, mass and compare how engineers of the time made lasting calculations.
Physics concepts can be explored through the forces and motions involved in the climb. Students can learn about gravitational forces, friction, and the physics of ascending and descending the bridge. They can also investigate how safety equipment functions to counteract these forces.
